Two New US Static National Records Set at AIDA Team Freediving World Championships

The United States Apnea Association (USAA) is pleased to announce that Deron Verbeck, a USAA member, set a new national record in the freediving discipline of static apnea with a breath hold of seven minutes and twenty-two seconds.  This performance surpasses the previous record of seven minutes and twenty-one seconds held by Bill Graham.  Jessica Wilson set a new US mark with a performance of six minutes twenty-seven seconds breaking her mother’s, Annabel Briseno, record of six minutes twenty-one seconds that at the time was a world record.

Both performances were part of team competition in Hurghada, Egypt as part of the fifth AIDA Team Freediving World Championships.  See www.usfreediving.org for daily updates.  The event web site is www.apneaegypt.com.  Deron placed third with his performance and Jessica finished second for the static event individually.  Both performances keyed a successful day for the US with the US Women winning the static event for the second time in a row in team world championships.  Both performances are the best ever completed by any US athlete in competition.  The US is becoming known as the static nation based on very strong performances in the discipline.

Static Apnea is performed laying face down in a pool with the athlete holding their breath as long as they can.  The time is measured by from submersion of the airway into the water until it’s exit.  This is the event for time of breath hold.  Other disciplines include tests in depth and distance.

The USAA is a nonprofit association founded on the democratic representation of freediving within the United States and internationally.  Founded in 2003, the USAA consists of an active membership dedicated to furthering freediving in the United States and abroad. For more information about the USAA, the U.S. National Freediving Team, and membership please visit www.usfreediving.org.

The International Association for the Development of Freediving, AIDA, is the international sanctioning body for freediving, individual and team competition, and freediving world record attempts.  For more information about AIDA please visit http://www.aida-international.org.
